Modigliana is a small town in the Tuscan-Romagna Apennines, in the province of Forlì-Cesena, Italy, in the Tramazzo Valley. This is where our Labrador Retriever kennel is, and below you’ll find the accommodation, restaurants and events we recommend to visitors: all between 1 and 7 km (0.6–4.5 miles) from the kennel.

Where to stay: 6 farm stays, country relais and resorts, almost all with a pool, 1.8 to 7 km from MyLabrador’s.
Where to eat: piadina and crescioni (Romagna flatbreads), fresh pasta, traditional Romagna cooking and pizzerias, 1 to 4 km away.
Things to see: the Rocca dei Conti Guidi fortress, the Ponte della Signora bridge, and the Don Giovanni Verità Museum with works by Silvestro Lega.

Things to See in Modigliana

In the Middle Ages, Modigliana was a fiefdom of the Conti Guidi, the family that owned more than two hundred castles across Romagna and Tuscany. Their rule left behind the Rocca dei Conti Guidi, the fortress overlooking the town, and the Palazzo Pretorio, the counts’ first residence.

Also worth seeing:

Ponte della Signora (or San Donato bridge): an 18th-century three-arched bridge with a very tall central arch, the symbol of the town.
Don Giovanni Verità Museum and Municipal Art Gallery: home to works by Silvestro Lega, the Macchiaioli painter born in Modigliana in 1826.
The cathedral and historic centre, with the Accademia degli Incamminati, whose origins date back to the 17th century.

Sangiovese in Festa

April

Modigliana Sangiovese is the wine of mountain Romagna. The festival is organised by the Pro Loco with the 12 wineries of the Stella dell’Appennino group, founded in 2017: dinner within the old town walls, tastings, a producers’ market, an amateur wine competition and music. The Don Giovanni Verità Museum and the Art Gallery are also open during the festival.

Wild Boar Festival (Sagra del Cinghiale)

E’ Zoc ed Nadel

24 December – 6 January

A huge oak log burns in Piazza Matteotti throughout the Christmas holidays, an ancient tradition. Every evening local associations and businesses offer tastings of local specialities and mulled wine.

Other Events

August and September

Patron Saint’s Day, 2 August. Modigliana celebrates its patron saint, Pope Saint Stephen I, with a solemn Mass in the cathedral, a procession through the historic centre and celebrations in town.

19th-Century Festival, September. For three days the town dresses in 19th-century costume, with tableaux vivants, period music, traditional food and workshops, in tribute to Silvestro Lega. 2026 marks 200 years since his birth.

By plane: the nearest airport is Bologna Guglielmo Marconi (BLQ), about 1 hour 15 minutes’ drive from the kennel. We recommend hiring a car at the airport.
By car from the A14 motorway: exit at Faenza or Forlì, then head up into the Tramazzo Valley.
From Bologna: about 90 km (56 miles).
From Florence: cross the Apennines on the Faentina road (SS302).
From Forlì: about 35 km (22 miles).

Come and meet us. A kennel visit is required before reserving: you’ll meet us, the mother and our dogs. A video call is fine only as a first contact.
