The best diet for the dog and for every living being is surely the one established by nature according to their species, physical conformation, digestive system, dental system, enzymatic system, immunological system, etc.
Numerous studies have shown how, over the last 20 to 30 years, the poor diet of dogs based on extruded industrial foods (kibble) has ‘created’ more and more individuals who develop dysbiosis (intestinal disorders) such as dysentery, gastritis, allergies, bad smell, dermatitis, otitis, excessive tearing and many other inflammatory diseases of the gastrointestinal system (IBD).
These diseases are almost always due to an industrial diet that turns the slaughter waste of the entire planet into a ‘dead food‘ that has the nutritional value of a shoe sole despite being labelled as “starred menus”.
I realise more and more how many owners, however, do not know what their dogs really eat, partly because they trust the feed industry too much, misleading advertising and ambiguous labels (kibble ‘with fish’ that does not contain fish meat, it seems impossible but it does, and so much more).
Not to mention medical feeds that solve nothing (Renal, Obesity, Gastrointestinal, Sterilised, Calm, etc.).
A human being to maintain good health should avoid industrial food and eat fresh, unprocessed food, right? Have you ever wondered how you would be if you ate fastfood all the days of your life (morning and evening)? If you come to understand this you can also understand how kibble is an invention of the feed industry: a food that does not respect the dog’s nature.
The choice to switch to a 100% natural diet with the right mineral balance is essential to ensure a healthy, fulfilling life for our dog with fewer vet visits and greater longevity.
Feeding differently from one’s own species inevitably means incurring illnesses of various kinds, illnesses that have now often become chronic in dogs.
The ideal diet for a carnivore, i.e. for a domestic dog or cat, is one that they would feed on spontaneously in their natural state, certainly not on a mixture of dry foods cooked at high temperatures, which turn out to be processed, denatured, meat derivatives, protein extracts, cereals, by-products of vegetable origin, oils, fats, yeasts, colourings, preservatives and many other chemical additives.
Once these substances reach the intestine and are absorbed through the bloodstream, they affect the health of various organs by weakening the intestinal microbiota and creating more or less serious diseases.
For various reasons, not everyone can follow a raw/barf or home-cooked diet, which obviously remains the best diet for dogs and cats.
There are, however, ready-made foods of very high quality, compared to the food from large retailers (the usual famous kibble brands).
In these foods, the quality of the raw materials used, the total absence of chemical additives and the mineral balance make a big difference to health.

Health is on your plate: no to industrial dog kibble
When it comes to feeding the Labrador, one of the biggest mistakes is to think that our dog is similar to us and should therefore follow our eating habits, with our rhythms and customs.
In reality, the dog is an opportunistic carnivore on a species level unlike us humans who are considered omnivores.
The most serious problem today is obesity in Labradors, caused both by a tendency of the breed to gain weight but also by the bad habit of their owners of eating food that is inappropriate to their nature and excessive quantities in relation to their energy needs.
The most frequently asked questions are: Is it true that with neutering we can see our dog gain weight? And what happens with ageing? How can I tell if my Labrador is overweight?
We will answer this last question straight away by saying that the most economical method of assessing a Labrador’s state of fatness is to palpate the fat thickness covering the rib cage and the ventral part of the abdominal wall.
Whereas in an overly thin dog, for example, the ribs are clearly visible and easily palpable, in an obese dog the ribs are not visible and only the panniculus adiposus covering them is palpated, in a normal-weight dog the ribs are barely visible but easily palpable.
How to prevent our Labrador from getting fat? The two factors are overeating and lack of exercise, so it is best not to overfeed your dog from the growth phase onwards and to accustom him to physical activity throughout his life, avoiding bad habits such as giving leftovers, snacks etc.

The dog still possesses 98% of the wolf’s DNA, so labelling it as different is at best ridiculous and offers clear opportunities to propose other ‘unnatural’ foods artificially produced with low-quality raw materials.
Don’t panic about the doses to be used or the choice of meat: the dog has no problems and the level of dietary balance must be reached over months and not daily as they would have you believe.
Let’s not go from one extreme to the other: from industrial food that contains nothing healthy to offering nutritional diets with starred gourmet menus, these are unmanageable situations and this is precisely why people often give up natural food because in this way they think that a natural diet is impossible to follow, but this is not the case.
Always think about how a wolf eats: boneless meat, soft pulpy bones, offal, vegetables, fruit… you call that a diet? He eats better than many dogs fed ready-made industrial food.
As for the vegetable protein portion, the vegetables must be cooked because the dog has difficulty digesting cellulose.
The choice of natural food is due to the simple fact that the dog is still an opportunistic carnivore.
Undoubtedly due to the selection made by man, the dog today is different from its progenitor (the wolf) and has become forcibly accustomed to these industrial agglomerates that have nothing natural about them.
In industrial food there are the waste products of industrial processing that are forbidden for human consumption (blood, faeces, urine, skin, hooves, nails) together with a lot of carbohydrates such as maize, corn and gluten, preservatives, flavourings, fats and other additives are increasingly weakening its immune defences.
Indicative components of poor quality in industrial kibble are:
- cereals as first ingredient
- unspecified cereals
- fish by-products
- meat by-products
- unspecified meat
- vegetable protein extracts
- animal fats
- plant by-products
- preservatives and EC antioxidants
Each individual product must be evaluated in detail. For example, there are also ingredients that are inappropriate (in my opinion) for dogs, such as soya and corn gluten.
Also consider that that low percentage of protein indicated for example from fresh chicken (usually 18%) in extrusion will become less than 4% meat, and what kind of meat will it then be?
Wheat is the cereal that should be avoided most of all, on several dogs it leads to allergies. Corn gluten, besides being an inappropriate protein source for a carnivore, is also an herbicide!
The unspecified ‘animal fat’ (if it were chicken it would indicate this) provides saturated fatty acids, which are heavy to digest.
